In Relationship

The above painting, Home Sweet Home, was painted about 5 years ago in recognition of the serious planetary conditions we are facing.  I was always surprised at the lack of reaction that people had in seeing this image.  Was it disaster fatigue?

Cosmic Being, shows a human being who has the point of view of Life. As Life, we are one with the universe and the ecological system of the earth. What happens to Earth and what happens to human beings has a direct impact on all of  us. We are not isolated beings. Everything is in relationship.

We are in danger of destroying our earthly home and ourselves as a species. If we wake up to the fact that we are not just isolated individuals living off the resources of the earth, but that we are in relationship to each other and to the planet, then we have a new basis of understanding. In order to find a  solution that is holistic and doesn't just fit the crisis of the day, we have to reach beyond political and ideological solutions, and see the psychological conditioning which creates our delusion of separation.

Everyday we are presented with countless images and ideas.  We are overwhelmed with motivational messages.  I don't feel that we have too much time to get this right, we have to act in an effective way.  We can't just entertain each other with idealistic slogans.

As an artist I am well aware of the power and limitations of images. When you look at these two images are you more motivated by one than the other?  Do these images speak to you?  Should we keep making images or is there something more important to be done?

  1. I think as a viewer impending disaster motivates people more to action- so in that regard the first image I find more motivational. The second is more calming, and makes me look more inward in an introspective sense. But I think they might be better suited to a series? I feel our brains are conditioned to see one image/event as a fluke.. when we see a number of them we feel like we have proof.

Of course there is the numbness factor also- I think that happens when the same idea is repeated over and over without new information being given. I think motivating people works best when presented as a series of information all in one go- a documentary for example. However, people wouldn't want to see that same documentary again just reorganized, it wouldn't create any more proof- but seeing a second documentary that brought into more facts and additional ways of looking at things might motivate people further.
