The Accumulation of Memory

The Accumulation of Memory

It’s three in the morning and I can’t sleep. I am overcome by my memories. I notice that I am not generating my thoughts, but that they descend upon me, consuming my attention and blocking awareness of the immediate surroundings.  I am so focused on the stories and recollections that it is as if I am under a huge pile of mental debris, the accumulated images of the past. With one deep breath, and a shift of perspective to the space I am actually in, the overwhelming past disappears.
